Battery rebate calculator: what's the discount on your battery?
The federal battery rebate is 6.8 certificates for every usable kWh up to 14 kWh, 60% of that from 14 to 28 kWh and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh, for batteries installed by 31 December 2026. At about $37 a certificate that's about $252 a kWh on the first 14, so about $2,500 on a 10 kWh battery and about $3,350 on 13.5 kWh (Clean Energy Regulator).
Type your battery's usable capacity below. The certificate count should match your quote exactly. Checked 1 October 2026.
Work it out for your battery.
off a 10 kWh usable battery installed in 2026, before the installer's certificate fee. Full rate on the first 14 kWh, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh, 15% from 28 to 50 kWh. It needs an approved battery of 5 kWh or more and an approved installer, and sits alongside solar.

Usable capacity is the figure on the datasheet, not the nominal one. Values at $37 a certificate; your installer's price per certificate may differ by a few dollars.
| Usable capacity | Certificates to 31 Dec 2026 | Discount to 31 Dec 2026 | From 1 Jan 2027 | From 1 Jul 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kWh | 34 certificates | about $1,250 | about $1,050 | about $950 |
| 10 kWh | 68 certificates | about $2,500 | about $2,100 | about $1,900 |
| 13.5 kWh | 91 certificates | about $3,350 | about $2,800 | about $2,600 |
| 16 kWh | 103 certificates | about $3,800 | about $3,200 | about $2,900 |
| 20 kWh | 119 certificates | about $4,400 | about $3,700 | about $3,350 |
| 27 kWh | 148 certificates | about $5,500 | about $4,600 | about $4,200 |
| 40 kWh | 164 certificates | about $6,050 | about $5,050 | about $4,650 |
How it's worked out for 20 kWh: 14 × 6.8 = 95.2, plus 6 × 6.8 × 60% = 24.48, total 119.68, rounded down to 119 certificates.
How much does the battery rebate drop?
It drops every 6 months. The factor is 6.8 until 31 December 2026, then 5.7 from 1 January 2027, 5.2 from 1 July 2027, 4.6 in early 2028 and down to 2.1 for the second half of 2030 (Clean Energy Regulator). On a 13.5 kWh battery that's about $550 less for an install in January than in December.
Why is my quote different from this calculator?
- Usable versus nominal capacity. The discount uses usable kWh. A 13.5 kWh nominal battery may be 12.8 usable.
- Price per certificate. Installers sell certificates at their own price, usually a few dollars under the $37-to-$40 range. Ask for the number they used.
- Install date. A December quote installed in January drops to the 5.7 factor.
- State programs. WA adds up to $1,300 or $3,800; NSW pays a VPP incentive. Those are separate lines.

Questions people ask.
What is the government rebate on a 10 kWh battery?
About $2,500: 68 certificates at about $37 for an install by 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 it's 57 certificates, about $2,100.
How much does the battery rebate drop in 2027?
The factor falls from 6.8 to 5.7 certificates a kWh on 1 January 2027 and to 5.2 on 1 July 2027. On a 13.5 kWh battery that's about $3,350, then $2,800, then $2,600.
Is the battery rebate means tested?
No. The federal discount has no income or property test. Some state programs do.
Why does my battery have two separate rebates?
Usually it's the federal certificates plus a state or VPP incentive, such as WA's Residential Battery Scheme or the NSW VPP incentive. They're separate programs and should be separate lines on the quote.
Do I apply for the battery rebate myself?
No. The installer creates the certificates and takes the value off your invoice. You sign the paperwork they give you.
Is there a maximum battery size for the rebate?
Certificates stop at 50 kWh of usable capacity, and the battery must be 5 to 100 kWh nominal. Above 28 kWh the factor is only 15%, so most of the value is in the first 14 kWh.
