How much does a solar battery cost in 2026?
A 10 kWh home battery costs about $7,000 to $11,000 installed with the federal discount already off, and a 20 kWh battery about $14,000 to $19,000 (CHOICE, updated 26 August 2026, using SolarQuotes data). The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is about $2,500 of a 10 kWh price, so before it comes off you're looking at about $9,500 to $13,500.
The discount drops on 1 January 2027, so unless installers cut their prices by the same amount, the same battery costs more to install in January. The installer's quote is the price. Checked 5 October 2026.
Battery prices by size, with and without the federal discount.
CHOICE's installed prices include basic installation and already have the federal discount off. The discount column is our calculation at $37 a certificate, treating the size as usable capacity; check the usable figure on the datasheet.
| Battery size | Installed, discount off | Discount inside it | Installed from 1 Jan 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | about $7,000 to $11,000 | about $2,500 | about $7,400 to $11,400 |
| 15 kWh | about $11,000 to $15,000 | about $3,650 | about $11,600 to $15,600 |
| 20 kWh | about $14,000 to $19,000 | about $4,400 | about $14,700 to $19,700 |
| 30 kWh | about $18,000 to $22,000 | about $5,700 | about $18,950 to $22,950 |
The last column assumes installers keep their prices where they are and only the discount changes. The Clean Energy Regulator sets the discount so it stays around 30% of the upfront cost as battery prices fall (Clean Energy Regulator), so prices may move too.
How much does a 13.5 kWh battery cost?
CHOICE doesn't list 13.5 kWh; it sits between its 10 kWh range (about $7,000 to $11,000) and its 15 kWh range (about $11,000 to $15,000), both with the federal discount off. The discount on 13.5 kWh of usable capacity is about $3,350 for an install by 31 December 2026 and about $2,800 from 1 January 2027. The battery rebate calculator gives the certificate count for any size.
How much does it cost to add a battery to existing solar?
The battery price is the same; what changes is the inverter. The federal discount covers a battery added to existing solar, but the inverter the battery connects to has to be able to join a virtual power plant and be on the Clean Energy Council's approved list, or have been listed when the solar went in. If it isn't, it has to be replaced, and that's an extra line on the quote (Clean Energy Regulator). Ask the installer whether your current inverter qualifies before you compare battery prices.
Why do battery quotes vary so much?
- Usable versus nominal capacity. The discount is worked out on usable kWh. Two batteries sold as 13.5 kWh can have different usable figures.
- The installation. CHOICE notes that a complicated installation bumps the cost up considerably: switchboard upgrades, long cable runs, a hard-to-reach wall.
- The certificate price. Installers sell the certificates at their own price, usually a few dollars under $40. Ask for the count and the price per certificate as separate lines.
- State programs. In WA a Synergy customer takes up to $1,300 more off, a Horizon Power customer up to $3,800, if they join a virtual power plant (WA battery rebate). NSW pays a VPP incentive set by the provider.

Questions people ask.
How much does a 10 kWh solar battery cost in Australia?
About $7,000 to $11,000 installed with the federal discount already off (CHOICE, updated 26 August 2026). The discount is about $2,500 of that for an install by 31 December 2026.
How much does a 20 kWh battery cost?
About $14,000 to $19,000 installed with the federal discount off (CHOICE, updated 26 August 2026). Above 14 kWh each extra kWh earns only 60% of the discount, so the discount on 20 kWh is about $4,400, not double the 10 kWh figure.
How much does a 13.5 kWh battery cost?
Between CHOICE's 10 kWh range ($7,000 to $11,000) and 15 kWh range ($11,000 to $15,000), with the federal discount off. The discount on 13.5 kWh usable is about $3,350 to 31 December 2026.
Does the battery price include the rebate?
The prices on this page do: the federal discount is taken off the invoice by the installer, so a quote should show the price before it, the certificate count and the price per certificate, then the total. State programs like WA's come off on top.
Will a battery cost more in 2027?
The federal discount drops on 1 January 2027, by about $400 on 10 kWh. If installers hold their prices, the price you pay goes up by that much.
How much does it cost to add a battery to an existing solar system?
About the same battery price, plus a new inverter if your current one can't join a virtual power plant or isn't on the Clean Energy Council list. The federal discount applies to batteries added to existing solar.

No. Rebate Calculator is an independent reference. Prices come from CHOICE and the discount rules from the Clean Energy Regulator.
